In order for you to have a sound understanding regarding your trauma which will be vital in helping you to build a solid foundation to confront that issue; it’s important that you get a good grasp of how the brain is structured internally, and how traumatic experiences have impacted and distorted its natural function.

Since the brain is a highly complex system, we’ll be focusing on its most basic faculties. For the sake of brevity, the brain can be broken down into two major parts known as the limbic system and the prefrontal cortex.

1) The Limbic System

The limbic system is our instinctive, unconscious, and emotional brain, in other words, the incarnation of our lower self.

It’s, in fact, the very embodiment of the “flesh” from a physiological standpoint. The limbic system can be considered as the seat of the “flesh” from a physiological level.

It monitors everything happening within the body at an unconscious level.

It controls the basic emotions like (fear, joy, anger, sadness, surprise, and so on).

Moreover, it controls primary drives like (hunger, thirst, sex, dominance, care of offspring, and so on).

It also has instinctive needs for air, food, water, sex, sleep, comfort, security, activity, and stimulation. Then it monitors our body’s temperature to ensure our vital organs can operate at an optimal level.

Morals and values are not found in this region of the brain. The limbic has no shame, regret, guilt, or remorse since it wasn’t built for that.

It mediates memory and learning at an instinctive and unconscious level.

It is irrational in the sense of not having any rational or conscious understanding of the reality of things in life.

The limbic system was built by God for a very specific purpose since it’s the very part of ourselves that sustains our daily survival. Our life from a biological level is based on the function of that part of the brain.

Most importantly, this is the very region that regulates pain, the heart of your ongoing issues with trauma.

The highest concentration of neurochemicals that produce human feelings is found there.

It regulates things like pain, pleasure, and bodily sensation and stimulation.

This is the sensational and emotional component of whom we are as human beings.

Beloved, this is where your most painful and brutal memories that are troubling your mind constantly are located.

1) The Prefrontal Cortex

The prefrontal cortex is the spongy part of the brain situated on top of the limbic system, which covers the front section of the frontal lobe.

This brain region has been implicated in planning complex cognitive behavior, personality expression, decision making, and moderating social behavior. 1

It is known as the higher functioning brain, the thinking brain primarily responsible for undertaking higher functioning activities.

Beloved, it’s the very embodiment of the mind itself from a physiological level.

It is rational and logical. Therefore, it has the capacity to understand the consequences of life’s issues.

The prefrontal cortex is the very part in which our executive functions and controls, such as the ability to think, feel, learn, act, and so on to express ourselves are located.

It is where thoughts and actions driven by internal motives are orchestrated.

This is the area in which morals and values are held.

It’s where guilt, shame, sadness, confusion, regret, or remorse is felt.

Bear in mind, the prefrontal cortex is the very incarnation of the soul itself.

In other words, this region of the brain is the seat of the soul.

This is the part of the brain through which the soul communicates consciousness through the body to animate it.

The prefrontal cortex can be labeled as our intermediate self.

It is what enables us to operate like conscious and intelligent being.
